What is the backstory behind your work, and what inspired you to write it?
It's a gift. Once I realized that writing was a gift I pursued it more. I began to write poems and songs. Songs were the first things that I wrote, after that I wrote a tribute to my husband's boss for an event. And that is how it all started.
No event inspired me and I can't remember what prompted me, it just started coming out of me. I remember I sent a song that I wrote to a publishing company. They said they would charge me $35.00 to put music to my lyrics. It was in the 70's and I thought that was a lot of money back then so I wasn't going to do it. Well, eventually I paid the money, and when I received the song back there were notes all over it! I found someone who I thought could play the song, and when they did it was the worst thing ever!

Evelena Jennings & Earline Connolly have co-authored this book of poems that focus on the historical struggle of slavery in America. Mother and Daughter highlight this event with the creative artistic expression of poetry and spoken word writings. Each poem and image take you back to a time of oppression and heaviness that Black Americans had to endure.
This Unique Expression of Slavery poem book is presented with beauty and light that contrast with the images that complement the weightiness of the poems.
